Tan Hill Inn is the highest pub in Great Britain near Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales.
Neil Hanson is an author who has had experience in many jobs including firstly running the pub and then subsequently buying and running it.
He regaled us with amusing and entertaining stories about his time at the Inn.
One particular highlight he shared with us was the “Everest” double glazing advert with Ted Moult. Neil initially penned a letter to the company offering his Inn to advertise their double glazing due to the cold climate with strong winds it continually suffered. The company quickly agreed to refurbish all the windows in the Inn. All existing windows were badly fitting and some even held in place with bits of wood. After the windows were fitted the local planning authority tried to have then removed as planning had not been approved but after much media interest they approved the windows.
Some 20 years later another ‘Everest’ advert took place after the windows had all been replaced again. Additionally, solar panels were fitted to the roof. However, having not learnt from their original installation, planning permission had again not been applied for. This time the planners succeeded and whilst they allowed the windows to remain in place, the solar panels had to be removed.
