Lincoln Castle is one of only two castles in England with two mottes and houses one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta.

Lincoln Castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1068, stands on the site of a former Roman fortress, strategically positioned 200 feet above the surrounding land to control key Roman roads and river routes. Its unique design includes two large mounds, or mottes, a feature shared only with Lewes Castle in England. Beyond its architectural uniqueness, the castle is historically significant for safeguarding one of the original 1215 Magna Carta documents, a cornerstone of English law and civil liberties, which remains on display for visitors today
